Functional and cosmetic benefits of orthognathic surgery

Do you suffer from severe jaw discrepancies? Is it causing you pain and discomfort? Are you looking for a solution?

If you answered yes to the former questions then orthognathic surgery may be the solution for you! Here at Victoria Park Dental Specialists in Eastwood, West Beach and Barmera we are able to help correct your jaw with a combination of orthognathic surgery and traditional orthodontic treatment. This combination of orthognathic and orthodontic treatment can help improve the relationship between your upper and lower dental arches as well as your teeth. Even more, this improvement can have positive results for both the function and aesthetics of your mouth and improve facial appearance.

What is orthognathic surgery?

Orthognathic surgery or ‘maxillofacial’ surgery works alongside traditional orthodontic treatment to correct or establish a stable, functional balance between the teeth, jaws, and inevitably the facial structure. Just as the word orthodontics means straight teeth, the word orthognathic means straight jaws.

Maxillofacial surgery is designed to treat your jaw imbalance and can help correct your bite, which can also improve the cosmetic appearance as well as the proper function of the teeth. Commonly orthognathic surgery is used to treat conditions of the jaw and face related to structure, growth, sleep apnoea, TMJ disorders and malocclusion. These conditions are often attributed to skeletal disharmonies and therefore cannot be easily treated with braces alone.

What should I expect for my orthognathic surgery?

Prior to your surgery, you should continue to maintain general dental maintenance and prevention. The first stage of treatment is involved with the alignment of the teeth. It is important to first use orthodontics to develop a stable relationship within the jaws. This prepares the dental arches for the surgical repositioning. This stage usually takes the longest.

Here at Victoria Park Dental, we will carefully review your photographs, x-rays and dental models to develop and complete your surgical plan. This is the second stage and the operation may involve work on just the single jaw or both jaws (maxilla and mandible).

The final stage involves post-surgical orthodontics and will help your teeth fit together. The length of this stage will be dependent upon each individual, however, we usually only require post-surgical orthodontics for 6-8 months.
