Orthognathic Surgery

Oral Surgery Adelaide SA

Orthognathic surgery is required to correct underlying jaw discrepancies that cannot be treated with braces alone…

At Victoria Park Dental Specialists in Eastwood, West Beach and Barmera we can use orthognathic surgery in combination with traditional orthodontic treatment to improve the relationship between the upper and lower dental arches as well as the teeth for a balanced and harmonious facial profile, jaw function and lip posture.

Who typically requires orthognathic surgery?

Those who are recommended orthognathic surgery usually suffer from large/severe jaw problems or discrepancies that simply cannot be addressed with orthodontic treatment alone. Mainly those who suffer from a protruding or receding jaw or have disproportionate facial harmony will most likely require this form of treatment to enhance their smiles. Often we will conduct orthodontic treatment in the form of traditional braces before surgery as this allows the teeth to straighten effectively and synergise the treatment combination for superior results.

What does orthognathic surgery involve?

Orthognathic surgery is a surgical procedure with a main goal of repositioning the jaws to a healthy and correct alignment, and can be performed as either singular or double jaw surgery depending on the complexity of the case. As this surgical treatment repositions the jaws it is often found to simultaneously help the patient achieve optimal facial harmony, as when the jaws are rotated the soft tissues of the face (i.e. nose, cheeks and lips) all move accordingly. As a result this generally provides a more desirable dento-facial aesthetic.

Orthognathic surgery has a wide range of benefits…

At Victoria Park Dental Specialists we are able to combine the effectiveness of traditional orthodontics with orthognathic surgery to provide pleasing results for our patients. Some benefits our patients have experienced with this combination of treatments include:

  • Properly aligning the jaws which enhances dental function and aesthetics
  • Create a more harmonious dento-facial aesthetic
  • Malocclusions are corrected
  • Create more space within the mouth
  • Achieving a beautiful straight and healthy smile

Orthognathic surgery can be performed on adults and children, however, we will only recommend this form of treatment if it is found to be within your or your child’s best interests.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
