Our principal orthodontist completes her sixth trip to the Long Tan Dental Clinic

Dr Helen McLean has just returned from another volunteering trip to Vietnam!

The Long Tan Dental Clinic was set up by Australian Vietnam Volunteers Resource Group and is staffed by Australian dentists and hygienists whenever possible.

Dr McLean is passionate about volunteering and this was her sixth trip to the Long Tan Dental Clinic. This dedication has rubbed off on her son who is a general dentist and has accompanied Dr McLean on two of her last trips.

The provision of dental care and dental hygiene education has not always been available in some areas of Vietnam. The establishment of the Long Tan Dental Clinic was part of an overall community health program to assist the villagers of Long Tan. Limited dental hygiene education combined with a diet high in carbohydrates and sugary drinks results in a high rate of dental caries. Some of the dentists’ work is concentrated on pain relief and dental treatments, but there is also a focus on educating the local community.

While at the clinic, Dr McLean not only provides dental care but she also teaches English to the head nurses in the Ba Ria Vung Tau Province.

Dr Helen McLean and her son thoroughly enjoyed their time at the Long Tan Clinic and are happy that they have had the chance to help local people that do not otherwise have easy access to dental treatment.
