What is an Orthodontist?

Orthodontists are qualified Dentists, who after attaining their degree from Dental School undertake additional full-time university study in an accredited Orthodontics course supervised by Orthodontists.

This additional training lasts at least two to three academic years. Orthodontists are highly trained experts who are educated in dentistry to straighten teeth and align jaws. By learning about tooth movement (Orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (Dentofacial Orthopaedics); Orthodontists are able to diagnose, prevent and treat dental and facial irregularities. Orthodontists treat a wide variety of malocclusions (misaligned aligned teeth and/or jaws). They regularly treat young children, teens and adults. Only Orthodontists are members of The Australian Society of Orthodontics (ASO).
