If you could solve a problem before it ever really started wouldn’t you?
Early orthodontic consults can help discover dental issues at the onset which can make it easier to treat and eliminate before they become more severe. At Victoria Park Dental Specialists in Eastwood, West Beach and Barmera we can help detect and treat your children’s dental issues before they progress.
As parents, we, of course, hope for the best for our children, which is why we encourage parents to bring their little ones in between the age of 7-8 for their first orthodontic check-up. However, if you are concerned about your child’s teeth before this age we recommended coming in as soon as possible for an assessment.
What are the benefits of early intervention orthodontics?
Early intervention orthodontics can help tackle dental problems before they become more severe. If left untreated, this can increase the time needed to correct the problem in the future and can cause more serious dental problems. Some of the early intervention issues include:
- Crowded teeth
- Erupting teeth
- Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
- Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
- Preserving space for teeth that are coming in
- Reducing the need for tooth removal
If your child is suffering from the above dental issues we recommend visiting us for a full mouth assessment.
Why should you consider early intervention orthodontics?
Having straight teeth and aligned jaws can help support the soft tissues which can help enhance your child’s dento-facial aesthetics. Ensuring your child has an aligned bite will help provide the better function of the jaws and mouth, which can help your child with fundamental actions such as speaking and eating. Straight teeth can be easier to clean and as we know it can sometimes be difficult to get our little ones to keep up with a good dental hygiene routine, having straight teeth can make this job much easier.
Encourage a positive view of your child’s orthodontic visit…
‘Dentophobia’ or a fear of going to the dentist often translates to a fear of the orthodontist as well. We encourage parents to bring in their children at a young age not only to assess their mouths but to familiarise them with the office. At Victoria Park Dental Specialists we will help ensure your child’s experience is fun, educational and comfortable.
Key indicators that your child may need early intervention orthodontics…
While we encourage parents to bring their children in at the age of seven you may need to bring in your child earlier if you think that they are developing dental issues. If your child is constantly sucking their thumb or has any dysfunction with their jaw they may require orthodontics. Other key indicators are; premature or late loss of baby teeth, a sunken or protruding jaw or an overbite, underbite or crossbite.
If my child undergoes early intervention orthodontics does this mean they won’t need braces later?
Every individual is different, and while early intervention orthodontics can help solve problems during the development of your child’s teeth they may also require braces later in life. In most cases, however, we are able to treat your child’s smile with early intervention orthodontics to help with development, hygiene, confidence and overall dental health.
Our highly experienced orthodontist Dr Helen McLean will assess your child’s smile and initiate treatment that generally provides optimal results for minimal time and expense. Tackling your child’s dental issues before they become more severe can make the future of their dental health that much easier!
