Do you have crooked teeth, and wish you could do something about it?
Good news! It’s never too late to get the smile you’ve always wanted. Thanks to modern advancements, orthodontic treatment is now a completely viable option for almost any adult. But if you hate the thought of wearing bulky, metal braces, you’ll be pleased to hear that there’s an alternative.
Invisalign is a treatment that is almost completely invisible—perfect if you don’t want to affect your appearance while you straighten your smile. The best part? Most people won’t even know you’re having treatment!
How does it work?
Invisalign is made up of a series of clear aligners that look much the same as a mouthguard. They are completely customised to your smile, so they fit comfortably and work by exerting constant pressure onto your teeth. Gradually, your teeth move into the desired position and every two weeks your aligners will be changed. Each set of aligners moves your teeth (a specified phase), after which you will move onto the next tray until your treatment is complete.
Are you a suitable candidate?
As with any treatment, you’ll begin by having a thorough assessment to check that Invisalign is your best option. Invisalign is best suited to patients who would like their teeth straightened but is not necessarily the appropriate treatment for severe malocclusions like overbites, underbites and crossbites.
How does the process work?
Once you have decided to begin the treatment, your orthodontist will conduct an analysis of your mouth, ensuring that you do not have any gum disease or decay. Then, she will take a comprehensive digital scan of your mouth so your Invisalign aligner trays can be customised for your individual treatment plan. Thanks to computer technology, you will be able to see a computer-generated image of the expected results of your treatment. When your aligners are ready, we will put the first set in for you and make sure that they fit snugly over each individual tooth.
What are the benefits of Invisalign?
Most of us would prefer to avoid traditional metal braces, so Invisalign is a great option for adults because they are so discreet. They are also easily removed, which is ideal during meal times and when you brush and floss your teeth. There are no dietary limitations or restrictions as you can remove them when you eat. In fact, the treatment will have very little impact on your lifestyle!
How long does the treatment take?
The treatment time can take anywhere between six months and two years, depending on your specific alignment needs. The success of the treatment is reliant on your commitment to wearing them for the recommended amount of time every day. They should be worn for 22 hours each day for optimal results, so it’s best to keep them in at all times, except when you are eating, or brushing and flossing your teeth.
